Treasures of the Library
Paper, Pens & Prose:
Explorations in American History Designed to complement the 5th, 8th, and 11th grade American history curriculum, this program focuses on primary source materials and artwork that document important events in our nation's past. Students visit both the Library and Scott Gallery of American Art as they explore American history at the Huntington.
Land of Golden Dreams: Although this show commemorating the 150th anniversary of the discovery of gold in California is no longer on exhibition in the Library, you can still visit it online.
The Great Experiment: The exhibition of original manuscripts, rare books, prints, engravings and artifacts was drawn from the collections of The Huntington and Pierpont Morgan Libraries, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and other institutions. It was mounted by The Huntington Library in 1998-1999 to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of Washingtons death. The show went on as a traveling exhibit to forty libraries nationwide. The Great Experiment: George Washington and the American Republic was been organized by The Huntington Library in association with the American Library Association. It was made possible in part through a major grant from The National Endowment for the Humanities, Washington, DC, with additional support from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Munger.
Teaching American History The United States Department of Education has created the Teaching American History (TAH) program to raise student achievement by improving teacher knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of American History. TAH grants are available to school districts who in turn partner with research institutions like The Huntington to provide teacher training and scholarly seminars that enable teachers to expand their students’ awareness in American History. To date, The Huntington Library has partnered with seven school districts under the TAH program, to develop lesson plans, provide scholarly lectures, and develop classroom and resource materials for the teachers. © 2008, Huntington Library.
