Camellias:
A Curator's Introduction to the Camellia Collection in the Huntington
Botanical Gardens

C. japonica 'Adolphe Audusson Variegated' is an excellent
example of virus variegation on a very dark red camellia. When the white
is evenly distributed on a dark background, it is quite striking. Most
people prefer the variegated form to the solid red. In most cases, the
virus does not injure the tree.

C. japonica 'Betty's Beauty' is one of more
than fifteen sports from the 'Betty Sheffield' line. Introduced by the
Huntington in 1975, it is a stable camellia whose flowers come "true"
and will not revert to a solid color.

C. japonica 'Margarete Hertrich', named in 1944 for the wife of Huntington superintendent William
Hertrich, was discovered among many hundreds of seedlings planted on the
grounds. Most seedlings do not have flowers worthy of being registered
and instead become rootstock for grafting camellias.
