William Rich Hutton, an itinerant land surveyor and mapmaker, produced dozens of pencil and watercolor drawings of California scenes during his sojourn there between 1847 and 1853.

As gold fever intensified through 1849 and beyond, shipowners and brokers in every major American port produced a blizzard of newspaper advertisements and broadsides. Seeing the opportunities presented by the enormous demand for passenger berths, they promoted their own golden visions of El Dorado.
