A Visit from Saint Nicholas Clement Clark Moore 32 pages, 9 x 10-1/2, color illus., cloth, About the Author Clement C. Moore wrote "A Visit from Saint Nicholas," America's most beloved Christmas poem, as a gift for his own children. If an enthusiastic houseguest had not sent the poem to a local newspaper editor, the jolly old elf who traveled by a reindeer-drawn sleigh might have enlivened only one family's holiday traditions. The Huntington Library's special edition of A Visit from Saint Nicholas features two treasures from the Huntington's collection, a replica of the poem written in Moore's own hand and an early printed edition, Visit of St. Nicholas (1869), one of the first American children's books to be illustrated in color. The 1869 volume boasts charming illustrations by an anonymous artist whose work perfectly captures the merry good humor of Moore's own story. This modern reproduction uses state-of-the-art methods to match the character of the originals as much as possible. Accompanied by an introduction by Sara S. Hodson (Curator of Literary Manuscripts), the facsimile of A Visit From Saint Nicholas demonstrates the cultural significance of a single, unassuming, merry poem that revolutionized the Christmas holiday and the legend of Saint Nicholas.
