Rare Books Department
The rare book collection includes printed books from the 15th through the 20th centuries. The department also houses maps, broadsides, pamphlets, newspapers, and many other printed formats. These collections of about 375,000 items are concentrated in the field of British and American culture with many topics and periods covered in extraordinary depth. Access is available through the Huntington Online Catalogue, the Huntington Author/Title Card Catalogue, special card catalogues and separately created databases at the Huntington, and published subject and period bibliographies. All of our STC books (English books printed before 1641) are available in the online catalogue. English and American books printed between 1641 and 1800 are also available in the online catalogue. A major portion of the English and American imprints before 1801 appear in the English Short Title Catalogue web site; the American newspaper collection is searchable through the California Newspaper Project web site.
The Rare Book Department oversees The Huntington's significant collection of ephemera (c. 300,000 pieces), which include posters, birdseye views, scrapbooks, promotional materials, etc. Particularly noteworthy are collections on California, maritime history, Southern California performing arts, and 20th-century American railroads.
The historic print collection includes approximately 230,000 items with significant holdings of British cartoons and English and American portraits.
The photograph collection of approximately 500,000 prints and negatives focuses on the history of the American West, with large holdings related to California and Los Angeles.
For information on Rare Book Dept. materials and photographic requests, we strongly urge faxing 626-449-5720.
