For the study of British art, The Huntington contains a well-known collection
of paintings of the Georgian period, and significant collections of portrait
miniatures, sculpture, ceramics, furniture, silver, glass, and a large collection
of approximately sixteen thousand drawings and watercolors.
For the study of Continental European art, The Huntington holds important
collections of French eighteenth-century paintings, sculpture, tapestries,
furniture, porcelain; small but distinguished groups of Renaissance bronzes
and Old Master prints; Renaissance paintings, seventeenth-century Dutch
and Flemish paintings, and eighteenth-century Italian paintings.
For the study of American art, the Virginia Steele Scott Gallery contains
a representative collection of about sixty paintings ranging from the 1740s
to the 1930s, with emphasis on the nineteenth century. There are also important
collections of works of art on paper, including extensive holdings of nineteenth-
and early twentieth-century photographs; the work of Edward Weston; illustrator
and cartoon drawings from the turn of the century; and drawings and photographs
for the study of Southern California architecture. The drawings and manuscripts
of the architects Greene & Greene, on deposit at the Scott Gallery from
the Gamble House (USC), are also available for consultation. These are complemented
by a strong collection of Greene & Greene furniture, as well as other
decorative arts objects from the American Arts and Crafts Movement.
Additional general information on the art collections is contained in The
Huntington Art Collections: A Handbook (1986 edition). The book, manuscript,
and study photograph resources at the Huntington for British and American
art and related specializations are extensive. Printed guides to both the
British and American manuscript collections are available. The Southern
California offices of the Archives of American Art, housed at the Huntington,
contain microfilms of the complete holdings of the Archives.
